5 Traits to Look for in a Pool Contractor

When preparing to add a new pool or renovate an existing pool, you want a contractor that you can trust. Pool installations are a major investment and you want to ensure it is done right. While there may be many companies that offer pool installation, not all are created equal. Some subcontract much of the work or may be landscapers that offer pool installation on the side. Here are five traits to look for in a pool contractor to ensure you get a qualified expert to install or renovate your pool.

  1. They have their own in-house crews. You want a pool contractor that specializes in pool installations and does not need to subcontract the work. This means one company doing everything from start to finish.
  2. An excellent warranty. Find a pool contractor that offers lifetime warranties on their shotcrete pools or fiberglass shells. You also want a warranty that covers the workmanship for at least a year.
  3. Landscaping and hardscapes can be completed by your contractor. Often you will need to add new landscaping, fencing and hardscapes with your pool. Make it easier by finding a contractor that offers these services.
  4. A project manager will oversee your pool installation. You want a company that give you a single point of contact that will be available throughout the build to answer questions or concerns.
  5. Excellent reputation and testimonials in your area. Choose a pool contractor that has a long-standing reputation for quality work in your area with local testimonials and examples of their work.

Choosing the right pool contractor can ensure your pool build goes as smoothly as possible. Make sure to vet your contractor to ensure they have all these traits to get your new pool off to a great start.

When is a Good Time for Installing a New Pool?

If you are envisioning yourself relaxing in a cool, refreshing pool during the hot summer months, you do not want to wait until summer. Planning, designing and installing a new pool takes time and summer is the worst time to schedule an installation. For new pools, start your project many months before summer to ensure you have the pool you want for the next swimming season.

Fall Planning

If possible, start your planning for your new pool in the fall, even if you are hoping for a spring or late winter installation. This gives you time to explore different design options and properly prepare for the project. After the summer months, pool services begin to slow down and have the time to discuss a new project, especially when you have months before you need installation.

Winter Preparation

Winter is a great time to begin getting ready for your installation. You can map out your yard and begin planning other aspects of your new pool area. You will want to consider landscaping that will match your pool style and have a design in mind to install with your new pool.

Early Spring Installation

The prime time for new pool construction is early spring or late winter. This gives you plenty of time for the installation and incorporating stylish touches before summer. By the time Memorial Day weekend arrives, you should be ready to throw your first pool party.

In warm regions of the country, pool installations can be done in any season, but avoiding the busy summer is always a good idea. If you have the time, plan ahead and work with an experienced pool contractor to ensure your installation goes smoothly.

3 Things to Consider Before Building a Pool

Are you ready to add an in-ground swimming pool to your home? There are so many benefits to owning a pool, both for your health and your property value. However, before you jump into pool ownership, you need to consider a few factors to make the most of your purchase. Here are three major considerations when planning for your new in-ground pool project.

  1. Type of pool. You have a few options when it comes to the type of pool you will build. While fiberglass pools are budget-friendly, they can be limited in size, shape and require access to the pool area for delivery. Cement or custom pools are more expensive, but have advantages in longevity and building options. The size and placement of your pool will impact the type of pool you may need.
  2. Pool equipment. What type of water system will work best for your needs? You need to think about the different filtration and sanitation options before you order your pool. Talk to your pool service about the different equipment available so you can make an informed decision.
  3. Additional features. It is simpler to have extra features included with your pool installation than to add them later. Consider whether you want interior lighting, a waterfall, spa or fire feature added to your pool area. These can be installed with your pool so that everything is done at the same time.

Building a new swimming pool is an exciting project, but you want to make sure you get the pool you envision. Find a quality pool contractor that has an excellent reputation for superior service to get the pool of your dreams.

Above Ground vs. In-Ground Pools

Do you have an above ground pool and wonder if it’s time to invest in an in-ground pool? While above ground pools are great for renters or in colder climates that only have a few months of warm weather, they are subpar for warm regions. They may be less expensive and easy to maintain, but they do not have all the other benefits of an in-ground model. Here are a few advantages to adding an in-ground pool to your home over owning an above ground model.

  • Deeper water. Above ground pools are limited in shape and depth. An in-ground pool can be made in whatever shape you choose and as deep as you prefer. This is wonderful for swimmers and divers that want the option to get the most from their swimming experience.
  • Value to your home. Installing an in-ground pool is an investment, but it also adds value to your home. A beautiful pool is an amenity that many home buyers consider a necessity; when it comes time to sell your home, a pool could impact the price and attractiveness of your home to buyers.
  • Beauty. There is no comparison in beauty when it comes to an in-ground pool versus an above ground model. In-ground pools become the centerpiece of your outdoor space, with many options to make them even more attractive. Water and fire features can make your pool sparkle, options that are not functional with an above ground pool.

Take the leap and trade in your above ground model for a beautiful new in-ground pool. Once you invest in this more versatile option, you will never go back to an above-ground pool again.

How to Choose the Best Pool Design

If you are building a new pool to enhance your outdoor living space, there are many considerations. Choosing the basic type of pool, size, shape and many other factors come into play. Creating the best pool design for your home will require you to consider all these factors, along with style and budget. Here are some things to keep in mind while designing your pool.

Type of Pool

Are you still stuck on the basic decision of whether to use fiberglass shell or to have a cement lined pool? Fiberglass can be less expensive, but you will be limited to the sizes and shapes available. Cement is better for those that want a customized design or a larger pool.

Shape

You want a pool shape that works with your style and needs. Rectangle pools are perfect for contemporary styles. Kidney or round-edged pools can have a more natural effect and work with your landscape.

Style

Your pool will be the centerpiece of your outdoor space. You want a beautiful style that will enhance the value of your home. Some features that can help stylize your new pool include:

  • Water features like a water wall or waterfall
  • Fire features
  • Underwater lighting
  • Tanning shelves
  • Natural stone pool deck

There are so many options available to customize the design of your pool. From the surface material and pool deck to the many extra features you can add, you can make your pool unique and tailored to your style. Talk to your local pool designer to find out more about what is available to create the perfect pool design for your home.

Pros and Cons of Adding a Pool

Do you look longingly at your backyard on warm days, wishing there was a pool to enjoy? A new swimming pool can be a wonderful luxury to own, but it does come at a significant cost. Before jumping into pool ownership, it is important to take a close look at the pros and cons of this large purchase.

Pros of Adding a Pool to Your Home

Quite simply, there is nothing better than a cool pool on a hot day. Owning a swimming pool during the hot summer months is a fantastic experience, with your own private place to relax. Some of the benefits include:

  • Fun for friends and family
  • Great exercise
  • Possible added value to your home

If you love the water and want a healthy way to relax with your family, it can be a wonderful option.

Cons of Pool Ownership

The obvious con of purchasing a pool is the cost. In-ground pools can run over $20,000 or more, plus fencing and other equipment. While pools can add value to the home, you must keep them maintained to ensure this is true when it comes time to sell.  Other costs to consider include:

  • Pool cleaning and upkeep
  • Repairs and resurfacing
  • Electricity and water costs

Even with expenses, many people are more than willing to pay for the cost of their pool to reap the benefits. If you want a cool way to stay fit or put a premium on your relaxation time at home, investing in a pool may be right for you. Talk to your local pool service to find about more about the costs and options available if you decide you are ready to become a pool owner.

5 Advantages of Concrete Pools

When it comes to installing a new pool, there are three popular options: concrete, vinyl and fiberglass. While fiberglass and vinyl swimming pools have their benefits, they have many more limits on design and size than a concrete pool. Here are five advantages to choosing concrete for your pool build.

  1. Concrete pools are built to last, giving you an edge for durability over other types. The solid construction is meant to withstand climate differences that can damage other pool construction.
  2. With fiberglass and vinyl pool shells, you are often limited on the pool designs available. With concrete, your pool can be designed to fit your landscape and vision for your backyard – you can make it unique to fit your style.
  3. Depth. Want a deep pool? Concrete pools can be made deeper than pre-formed shells of other types, great for those who want to dive or swim deep.
  4. Value. In many cases, a concrete pool will add more value to your home than other options due to the durability. Even if you sell your home ten or more years from when it is installed, it will still have many years of enjoyment left.
  5. Vinyl and fiberglass shells must be able to be delivered whole, which can be a problem on some properties. A concrete pool is built on-site, so no access is needed to deliver the shell.

When it comes to design, value and durability, concrete pools can outperform their counterparts. You can make the pool of your dreams, without the limitations that can come with other options. To learn more about concrete pools, contact your local pool builder to find out the detail on design, cost and installation times.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Buy a Pool?

Like any large purchase, timing is everything when it comes to buying and installing a pool. Summer is the time when pool companies are at their busiest, both installing new pools and renovating older pools. If you are considering installing a new pool, there are a few considerations when it comes to timing and cost. Here is the best way to decide when to buy your new pool.

Avoid Summer

If any way possible, do not wait until summer to decide to install a new pool. Prices are higher due to demand and you can expect to have pool construction taking over your yard during the entire process. Fall, winter or spring are all better options, with more pool contractors available and better price options. Plus, you won’t need to cancel your family barbecue due to a large hole in your backyard.

Pool Installation Requires a Time Commitment

Designing and installing a new pool will require a time commitment on your part. Although your pool contractor can do the work without your help, there will be many decisions to be made and there may be times where you need to be home during the process. You will want to choose a time during the year that someone in your household that can make decisions will be available.

For many people, late winter or early spring is a great time for getting a new pool installed. It ensures that it will be ready for the summer, without bartering for time during the busiest season. If you are ready to purchase a new pool, plan accordingly to have it installed in the off-season and save a little money on your investment.

5 Benefits of Owning a Swimming Pool

Have you been considering adding a swimming pool to your home? While a pool is a luxury, it can have many benefits that can make this a worthwhile investment. When researching the cost and types of pools available, keep in mind these five benefits a swimming pool can offer.

  1. Swimming is a great source of exercise for the whole family. Whether you do laps in the morning or the kids play in it during the hot afternoons, the water creates resistance to help you build muscle and can be a wonderful cardio workout without the heat factor.
  2. Having a relaxing pool at your home can give you a needed place to relax. Stress can cause many health problems; if relaxing in or by the pool quells anxiety or stress for you, it is worth the investment.
  3. Comfort. Nothing beats a cool dip in the pool on a hot summer’s day. If you live in a region with hot weather, you will appreciate the option to cool off when those triple digits show up on the thermometer.
  4. Home value. A swimming pool is an investment in your home. Adding a pool can make your home more desirable and valuable when it comes time to sell.
  5. Entertainment. Swimming pools are a wonderful source of entertainment for your family and friends. It is a great centerpiece for your home parties, as well as intimate family fun.

Adding a swimming pool to your home is a significant investment, but many pool owners will tell you it is worth every penny. Make sure you find a quality, experienced swimming pool construction contractor when it comes time to install your new pool to get the most for your money.

Is a Gunite Pool the Best Choice for My New Pool?

Gunite pools are the most popular types of in-ground pools in the country, along with their cousin shotcrete. If you are building a new pool, you may be wondering why these pools are so popular and if they are the right option for your home. While vinyl and fiberglass pools can be a fine choice for many, they do not offer the durability and options of gunite pools.

Gunite pools are created by removing the soil where the pool will be designed, and adding the needed plumbing. Once the plumbing is installed, the framework of the pool is created using rebar. The bars are spaced less than a foot apart and connected with mesh to make the interior of the pool. Once this grid pattern is in place, gunite is sprayed onto the rebar and mesh. This creates the shell of the pool which is later covered with paint or plaster.

The benefits of gunite are simple – it lasts longer and can be made any shape, depth or size. While vinyl and fiberglass are pre-formed, gunite and shotcrete pools can be designed around your home. You do not need to worry whether there is enough space to deliver your fiberglass shell or whether it will fit in your yard.

So is guinte the best choice for your new pool? Many people would say yes, but if budget is a concern, vinyl or fiberglass can be less expensive. But if you want an investment that will last for decades and has design flexibility, choosing gunite or shotcrete is most likely your best bet. Of course, make sure you choose a highly experienced pool contractor with an excellent work guarantee for whatever pool you choose.
