Is Your Pool Water Green?

If your pool water is green, you most likely have an algae problem. There are a few ways to remedy this situation. Algae is one of the factors you want to prevent in your pool water by keeping the right chemical balance, filtering and cleanings. If you have green pool water, you need to address the following issues to kill and remove the algae to restore your swimming pool to a healthy water balance.

Check the Chemical Balance

Keeping a perfect chemical balance in your pool can be challenging, and if one of the perimeters is off, you can have algae growth in your pool. Make sure the pH is between 7.4-7.6 and check the alkalinity, calcium, free chlorine, combined chlorine and phosphates as well.

Shock Your Pool

It may take shocking your pool to get rid of the algae problem. You can buy pool shock and chlorine to rid your pool of your algae problem, just follow the instructions based on the size of your pool.

Filter Issues

If your water chemical balance is good and shocking the pool did not rid your pool water of algae, you may have a filtering problem. Make sure your pool is filtering constantly until the algae is gone – often it is only set to filter a set number of hours per day. You may also need to change the filter.  One other possible problem is your filter is too small for your pool size. If that is the case, you may need a bigger filtration system.

If you do not want to mess with ridding the algae from your pool yourself, call your local pool service. They can perform a complete cleaning and find the solution for restoring clear, clean water to your swimming pool.

5 Ways to Stage Your Pool When Selling Your Home

Are your getting ready to sell your home? If you have a pool, it may be one of the selling points of your home that you want to make look its best. Homes that are for sale are often “staged” to help them look attractive to potential buyers. While this is common inside the home, the pool area is another place where a little sprucing up can help make your home appealing. Here are 5 ways to stage your pool to get it ready to sell.

  1. Clean the pool. Start with the basics. Make sure the pool is sparkling clean – hire a pool maintenance service to do a thorough cleaning shortly before you start showing the home.
  2. Replace any small worn fixtures. Even if they still work, if there are rusty, cracked or worn fixtures on pool equipment, replace them. These are usually inexpensive, but make the equipment look faulty or old
  3. Clean the pool deck and equipment. Giving the surfaces around the pool area a pressure washing can make the area look tidy and attractive.
  4. Add landscaping. If your pool surroundings look bare, consider adding some plants to give it a more natural or oasis appeal.
  5. Brighten the pool and pool deck. A little blue dye in the water, bright throw pillows on the pool furniture and other small touches can help add a little pizazz to the scene and make a good first impression.

Cleaning and a few small additions or repairs to your pool and pool area can make a difference on how buyers perceive your home. It is worth the small investment of time and money to make your pool area shine when you start showing your home.

Tips for Getting Your Pool Ready for Swimming Season

In most parts of the country, swimming pool owners close the pool for the winter, waiting for the warm, late spring days to arrive before they open it again. However, it is not as simple as pulling off the pool cover to get your pool ready for swimming season. There is a little pool cleaning and maintenance that needs to be done first to ensure your pool is safe and prepared for the summer ahead.

  • Skim out any debris. Even with a pool cover, debris can find its way into your pool. Skim out any large pieces you can.
  • Turn on your pumps and filtration system. Remove any plugs that had been put in when closing the pool and turn on all your pool equipment. Clean the filter and baskets.
  • Add water. You most likely lost water over the winter from evaporation. Add water to bring the pool up to the correct level.
  • Test and balance your chemicals. You will need to add your pool chemicals and/or use your chlorinator to achieve the correct chemical balance for clean, safe swimming water.
  • Run the filtration. Continue running the filtration cycle and cleaning the filter until the water runs clean – don’t attempt to swim until the water is clean and safe.

Your pool equipment should also be inspected and serviced before the swimming season. Make it easy on yourself and call your local pool service to perform a service on your pool pump and equipment, as well as pool cleaning and chemically balancing your pool. They can help ensure your pool is clean and safe for the swimming season, so you can enjoy fun in the sun all summer long.

End-of-Summer Pool Cleaning

Summer is definitely swimming season, meaning your pool gets used almost every day. While you may be great at keeping it maintained, all that use can add up over the summer months. If your pool is looking a little rugged after all the pool parties and late night dips, it may time to schedule a deep cleaning for your pool to bring it back to its pre-summer condition.

Deep Cleaning for Your Pool

Regular weekly cleanings are needed to remove debris from the pool, keep your chemical balance in check and clear out your pool filters. But at the end of the summer, you need to go a little deeper to remove all the excess contamination that can build up on the walls, floors and inside your pool equipment. Here are some areas that need to be covered when performing a deep cleaning for your pool:

  • Scrub walls. Your pool walls need a good scrubbing after the summer. Although pool services often perform these every time they service a pool, this is a step that often gets missed by DIY pool maintenance.
  • Vacuum and skim the pool. Most pool owners do not own a pool vacuum that can remove all debris from the water, so to get a deep cleaning you need a professional pool service to perform vacuuming.
  • Inspect and clean pool equipment. All valves, skimmers, filters and impellers should be cleaned and inspected as part of your end-of-summer pool maintenance.
  • Stain removal. Over time your pool can become stained from the minerals and algae in the pool water. A professional pool service can remove most stains during a deep cleaning.

Many pool services offer one-time deep cleaning services as well as ongoing pool maintenance. To get your pool back to pristine condition, call in a professional this fall.

How Regularly Do You Clean Your Pool?

If you own a pool, you know it must be cleaned regularly to maintain a safe swimming environment. But are you cleaning it often enough? If you’re new to owning a pool and have been maintaining it on your own, it’s possible you’re not doing enough to keep your pool clean. Consider the dangers of letting your pool go too long without a thorough cleaning.

Algae Growth

In warmer climates, especially the humid areas of the southeast, algae can grow at an alarming rate in pools. You need to keep your chemical balance at a level which will inhibit algae growth, plus clean the pool walls and surfaces around your pool regularly.

Recreational Water Illnesses

Pools without a proper pH balance can be dangerous to your family’s health. Recreational water illnesses are caused by germs that can be inhaled or swallowed from contaminated pool water. You need to understand how to keep your pool clean and ensure that your chlorine levels are correct to keep these germs at bay.

Pool Repairs

Dirty pools can also cause problems with your pool equipment. Too much algae, debris or bacteria in your water can clog filters and put stress on your pool pump. Also, this equipment needs to be regularly cleaned and serviced to ensure it’s working correctly and to maintain the pool water’s chemical balance.

The best way to ensure your pool is staying clean and healthy is to hire a professional pool service to maintain your pool. Most offer weekly or bi-weekly service to clean, inspect and maintain your pool for a reasonable price. Making sure your pool is always clean and safe for you and your family is always a worthwhile investment, and can help extend the life of all your equipment.

Pool Water Without Chlorine?

Traditionally chlorine has always been used to clean and disinfect the water in commercial and residential swimming pools.  While very effective, there are a number of downsides to chlorine such as irritating and drying out the pool users skin and causing discoloration to the swimmer’s clothing.  In addition, chlorine is not a “green” product and can be hazardous if the material is misused or if the containers are not properly disposed of when empty.  Advances in technology have resulted in two alternate systems, which make it possible to reduce the amount of chlorine by up to 90% thru the use of either an ozone generator or a chlorine generator.

The first system generates ozone, which is a natural product that has excellent sanitization properties.  One of the benefits of this system is its ease of incorporation into existing pool equipment, as well as its effectiveness in keeping the water in the pool clean, while greatly reducing the amount of chlorine in the pool.   The second system is a chlorine generator or a “salt system” and relies on installing an electrolytic cell onto the existing pool equipment and adding salt to the pool.  As the water passes by the cell, it reacts with the salt, creating hypochlorous acid, which is the key killing ingredient found in chlorine.

This system requires little maintenance beyond maintaining the salinity of the pool.  Added benefits include a lack of a chlorine smell and the overall salinity of the pool is very, very mild. Both systems are affordable and will reduce the cost of keeping the pool clean, while providing a “greener” alternative to chlorine.

Residential Pool Cleaning

While residential swimming pools offers many hours of enjoyment, they take maintenance to keep them clean, safe and in perfect operating condition.  In today’s busy world, many people simply do not have the time to do the maintenance themselves and will often turn to a residential pool cleaning service instead.  No matter who does the work, the proper cleaning and maintenance of a residential swimming pool is critical to keeping the pool owner and their family safe and healthy.  It also helps in avoiding a wide variety of costly pool repairs due to improper maintenance!

Many pool owners elect to do a weekly cleaning and service, where a trained technician will perform a variety of cleaning and maintenance services including checking and adjusting as necessary the auto-cleaning system, clearing the skimmer baskets, adjusting valves and unclogging impellers, applying chemicals, checking the chemical balance of the pool, inspection and maintenance of all pool equipment, brushing the walls of the pool and vacuum and skimming the pool.  Additional services can include such things as stain removal, which are often the result of untreated manganese, copper and other metal that result in decay and balancing the chemicals, as well as the pH in the pool.

In most cases, the scope of services for residential pool cleaning and maintenance can be custom tailored to the needs of the pool owner and their budget.  While many select a weekly cleaning program, others opt for a one-time pool clean up and service.  While it may appear to be a simple task, the cleaning and maintenance of the pool is just as important as any other part of the home and is critical to the longevity of the pool.

Pool Service Provides Safety

Stop! Don’t jump into that pool, yet! Yes, winter was long and now it is beautifully warm, just right for a swim. But, if your pool has not yet been serviced, it is not ready to be enjoyed. Don’t allow the potential of harmful bacteria to affect your family, friends and neighbors. Have your local swimming pool professional out to service your pool and keep it maintained according to the highest of industry standards for healthy and safety.

Pool service packages can vary in frequency, based on your needs or preference. During a scheduled service, a technician should vacuum clean the entire pool and test for appropriate levels of chemicals in the pool water.  They can then make whatever adjustments appear necessary at that time. They will also clean the filter and make sure that your pool equipment is functioning correctly.

Your pool’s perimeter decking should be cleaned and inspected by the technician for any cracks or chips. If during your service the technician notices a problem, options for repair or replacement will be discussed. Often, repairs can be made by the technician during that scheduled maintenance service visit. You’ll find that most technicians carry a full supply of chemicals, repair tools, and various parts for most brands of pool equipment.

It is always preferable to spend time and money for the maintenance of something of value, rather than allowing it to fall into such a state of neglect that requires expensive repairs. Relax with ease and peace of mind as you entertain in your own backyard paradise, knowing that your local professional pool service company is maintaining the health and safety of your pool.

Cleaning Your Pool

It’s important that your swimming pool should be kept clean, even if the job might seem like a long or arduous process. The thing to remember is that regular pool service means that more time can be spent swimming and staying healthy — not having to worry about getting sick from your pool water makes it much easier to enjoy your time out in the water.

Different sized pools require different sorts pool service, but most have similar concerns and issues to keep in mind while cleaning them. Keeping the water free of any and all debris or other materials like leaves, insects, pine needles and more is very important, as they can get into the filtration system of your pool. Make sure to clean the surface for any floating debris, and to make sure the bottom of the pool is cleaned as well.

Make sure that the walls and bottom of the pool are scrubbed and vacuumed. Depending on where your pool is located near your home, vacuuming or brushing the walls or bottom of the pool should be done at least once or twice a week, depending on your availability and free time. This allows algae or other scummy buildup to be cleared away.

Lastly, make sure to check the filters of your pool’s filtration system on a regular basis — at least once a month, but make sure to check the manufacturer’s recommended instructions as to how often the filter should be checked or replaced. Replacing filters too soon is an unnecessary expense, and may even be detrimental to the regular care of your pool.

Common Swimming Pool Mistakes

Swimming pool maintenance is not difficult, but it does require a commitment to frequent maintenance and testing.  If you prefer to enjoy your pool rather than maintain it, consider hiring a good local pool service to handle the pool cleaning and maintenance.  They will handle cleaning the pool, adjusting the chemical balance, and take care of your other pool maintenance needs so you can spend more time enjoying your sparkling clean pool.

First, check your pool chemistry at least twice a week and make any necessary adjustments right away.  It is much easier to keep a pool in balance than it is to clean up a pool that has been let go.  Small, frequent adjustments are the best way to keep the pool chemistry in the proper balance.  Add pool chemicals in the evening so they are not adversely affected by the sun.  The chemicals will be more effective because they will have all night to work.

Keep your pool’s pH level below 8.0, preferably around 7.5, to allow the chlorine in the pool to work effectively.  You should also keep the pool’s alkalinity between 80 and 140 ppm to keep the water in balance and sanitized.  Run your pool pump at least ten to twelve hours a day in the summer and eight hours in the winter.  Good pool circulation is important for a clean, healthy pool so the more you run the pump the cleaner the pool will be. If your skimmers are clogged with leaves and other debris, your pump will work harder and you will have poor water circulation.  Clean your skimmers frequently.

Finally, if you have a sand filter, don’t backwash it too frequently.  You will waste water, need to use more chemicals, and these filters work more efficiently when they are not cleaned too often.  Wait until the pressure gauge indicates that it is time to backwash the filter
