4 Signs of Trouble in Your Pool

With regular maintenance, pools can last for decades without any major issues. It is easy to become complacent, assuming your pool is working the way it should. However, a small issue can become a big, expensive problem if not fixed right away. Here are four signs you may have a problem with your pool and need professional pool repairs.

  1. Water loss. Although some water loss from use and evaporation is normal, when your pool water level is changing quicker than in the past, you need to investigate. Pool leaks can cause serious damage to your home and property.
  2. Fluctuating PH levels. When your PH levels keep fluctuating, there may be trouble in your pool. Call in a pool expert to find out how to even out your PH levels and keep a sanitized, safe pool. Hiring a pool service for maintenance may be your best bet.
  3. Dirty pool water. Is your pool looking murky or having algae issues? It may be time to clean your filters. All pools have some type of filter system and all of them require ongoing maintenance to keep your pool water clean and safe for swimming.
  4. Loud pool equipment. If your pump or other pool equipment is loud or making strange noises, call in a pool professional. Get a service and inspection to ensure all the equipment is working properly. It is less expensive to replace components as needed than to have a complete failure.

Keeping an eye out for signs of pool issues is important when you own a pool. If you have ongoing pool maintenance, you can relax knowing these issues will be caught by your service team and repaired as needed.

Do I Have A Leak In My Pool?

One of the dangers of owning a pool is the possibility of springing a major leak. Not only will it cost you money in water and chemical replacement, it could also severely damage your property. A major leak can erode the surrounding earth, cause water damage in your home and even endanger your home’s foundation. There are a few simple warning signs to keep an eye out for which can indicate possible leaks, helping you to detect them as soon as possible, including:

  • Unusual water loss. A certain amount of water loss is expected and normal, especially during the hotter months and when the pool is used heavily. However, if you notice a more significant drop in the water level than usual, you may need to call in a leak detection expert.
  • Wet areas in your yard. Are there wet spots in your yard near or around your pool? Isolated wet spots may be a sign that you have an underground leak which is saturating the area.
  • Do the bucket test. The tried and true method to check to see if your losing pool water is the bucket test. Partially fill a bucket to place on a step or shallow portion of the pool, with the water level in the bucket matching the pool’s water level on the outside of the bucket. If after several days the water on the outside of the bucket is lower than the water in the bucket, you may have a leak.

If you think you have a leak, don’t hesitate to call in a pool service experienced in pool leak detection and repair. They can quickly find where the leak is originating, and give you options for getting it repaired quickly to avoid any further damage to your property.

Troubleshooting Pool Pump Problems

Your pool’s pump is an essential component to the overall system, circulating the water in your pool through the filter. Not only does this purify and clean the water, it also ensures that your pool water chemicals are evenly distributed. Unfortunately, the pool pump is also one of the most common repair issues for pool owners. Knowing how to troubleshoot your pool pump can help you determine the problem, so you know if you need to call a pool professional to fix the issue.

Common Pool Pump Problems

Like any mechanical device with a motor, your pool pump needs regular maintenance to perform optimally. In addition, there are parts which will eventually wear out and need replacement. Here are the most common signs of a pool pump problem.

  • Pump shuts off. Most pumps are designed to shut off automatically if they get too hot. It may be overheating due to debris getting stuck in the impeller.
  • Pump won’t start. If the pump will not turn on at all, check the breaker to the pump to make sure it has not been flipped off. If the breaker is fine, then it may be a loose wire or connection. It is also possible that the motor needs to be completely replaced.
  • Pump is leaking. If the pump is leaking water at the connections or plugs, the plugs may just need to be tightened. You may also need a new o-ring if the pump continues to leak at the plugs.

Keep in mind that preventive maintenance to inspect the pump and replace pool filters should be performed to the manufacturers standards. If simple troubleshooting does not fix the problem, call your local pool pump repair service to get the issue resolved.

Common Pool Repairs

Just like a car, all swimming pools will need repairs at some point.  These repairs generally involve the pool equipment, which includes either the pool pump or the pool filter.   A qualified swimming pool repair company will have the expertise, tools and access to the necessary parts to quickly make the repair and get the pool operational again.

Pool pumps, which are either single speed, two speed or variable speed, consist of a housing and an electrical motor.  A single speed pump is not efficient as it runs at a high speed all of the time and draws lots of power, resulting in increased electric bills, while the two speed and variable speed pumps will run at a reduced speed if the demand on the pump is low, resulting in lower electrical costs.   In most cases it is the motor itself that fails and in many cases it is more economical and quicker to simply replace the pump with a new one.  In many cases the pool repair contractor will recommend a variable speed replacement pump, as they are very efficient to operate and last longer, because they also run cooler.

There are three types of swimming pool filters being used including cartridge filters, diatomaceous filters and sand filters.  All work in the same manner with water from the pool being pumped into the filter and then is pumped back into the pool after it exits the filter.  All of these filters require that the filter medium to be replaced in order to continue to properly filter the water being used in the pool.  Although a relatively simple repair, it is critical that it be done.  The pool repair contractor may also recommend that the filter system be upgraded as well.
