Five Great Reasons To Get A New Swimming Pool

Most people don’t need to be sold on the benefits of owning a pool; just the cool water on a hot summer day is usually enough to entice the average homeowner. However, it can be difficult to justify spending thousands of dollars for what may seem like just a luxury item. Although owning a swimming pool is a luxury, it does offer more benefits than just a dip in cool water on a hot day. Consider these five great reasons to invest in a new swimming pool for your home.

  1. Add value to your home. An in-ground swimming pool can add to the value of your home, making it more desirable to some potential buyers when it comes time to sell.
  2. Low-impact exercise. For those with joint problems or other physical limitations, swimming is excellent resistance exercise with little impact on joints.
  3. Great for entertaining. Nothing draws better attendance to a party than adding the word “pool” to the word “party” on your invitations.
  4. Family fun in your backyard. Pools are a great way to enjoy time with your family while getting some physical exercise. Swimming is fun and rewarding for kids when done safely, with adults supervising.
  5. Cool, clear water. Ultimately, the best reason to have a pool is often the most obvious. Hot days and cool pools are a perfect combination.

If you are ready to invest in a new pool for your home, there are many shapes, sizes and options from which to choose. Start your research by calling your local pool service company to find out what pool will be the best fit for your home and family.

Enjoy A Clean, Safe Pool With A Salt Chlorine Generator

If you own a pool and use chlorine and other chemicals to manage your pH balance, you know how harsh these chemicals can be. Just the smell alone can be noxious, along with eye irritation and damage to your skin and hair. There is a better way to keep your pool safely within the right pH range, with fewer chemicals and less required maintenance to accomplish those goals. A salt chlorine generator can make a significant difference in the quality of your pool water, while requiring less maintenance and chemicals to maintain your pool.

What Is A Salt Chlorine Generator?

The way a salt chlorine generator works is by creating its own chlorine from sodium chloride in the water. To allow this to happen, the water in the pool must first be brought up to a salt-water ratio of at least 3,000 ppm, or 3,000 parts per million, of salt. What the generator does is use this salt concentration to create hydrogen gas and hypochlorous acid by using electrolysis to break the salt particles into these two elements as the water passes through the salt cell. The gas evaporates up through the water, while the hypochlorous acid sanitizes the water. Once the water passes back into the pool, the salt reforms and the process begins over again.

The benefit of this method is that there are fewer chlorine concentrates in the water, creating a more pleasurable swimming experience. For those who are sensitive to chlorine or and are looking for chlorine alternatives, this is a perfect solution. Although pool chemistry must still be monitored, using a salt chlorine generator eliminates the need for many chemicals which are traditionally needed on a weekly basis. To learn more, call your local pool service company to discuss having a new salt generator installed in your pool.

Has Your Pool Turned Into A Large Hot Tub?

The dog days of summer are the hottest of the year, and the best time to take a cool dip in your pool. However, when the weather gets this hot, often your pool water is no longer as cool and refreshing as you want it to be. Especially in smaller pools with depths under six feet, the hot summer sun can heat the water up quickly, making your pool feel more like a hot tub than the refreshing oasis you want. If you are having problems with a hot pool, there are a few ways to get it cooled back down to a pleasurable temperature.

Cooling A Hot Pool

A few degrees can make a big difference in a pool. Once the water gets above the 80-degree mark, a pool can begin to feel overly warm, especially on a hot summer day. To naturally cool your pool without adding cold water or messing with the chemistry, you can use the cooler night temperatures to cool the water a few degrees. If you have a waterfall feature, run this during the coolest hours of the early morning to expose as much water to the colder air as possible.

However, the easiest way to cool a pool is to install a chiller device. Many pool owners do not have one of these installed on their pools, worrying more about heating the pool than cooling it down. While it may not need to be cooled often, when the weather is scorching, people want their pools to cool them off in short order. A chiller can keep your pool’s water at the refreshing temperature you want on those hot days of summer, so call your local pool construction and repair company to schedule an installation before the next big heat wave.

Common Pool Repair Issues

Having a pool at your home is a wonderful luxury; however, owning a pool does require regular maintenance and eventually, it will also require repairs. An in-ground swimming pool contains a complicated system of pumps, filtration and ground-water balance which must be monitored to ensure everything is working properly. If not maintained, you can end up with unsafe water to swim in, or worse, a pool that can damage your home and property.

Signs Of Pool Problems

The best way to maintain your pool is to be aware of any small issues before they become large problems. There are things to look for that can alert you to possible problems.

–        Poor pH balance. If your pool seems to be constantly out of chemical balance, there may be something wrong within the system. The pump may not be circulating the water properly, or the filtration system may be failing. Call in a pool professional to help fix the issue.

–        Cracks or chips. Cracks or chip in your pool’s surface or even on your pool deck can be a hazard, plus they may be symptomatic of larger issues. Ground shifts can cause pool deck cracking and more serious problems than just a stubbed toe.

–        Leaks. Pool leaks are a major problem, especially if they aren’t caught quickly. At any signs of water loss or wet areas in the ground near the pool, call in a professional pool service to evaluate the problem. A major pool leak can damage your home and property, so getting it fixed right away is crucial.

The easiest way to keep your pool safe and maintained is to hire a qualified pool service to clean, inspect and maintain your pool on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, ensuring that any problems are brought to your attention immediately.

Is Your Pool Pump Air Locked?

A common issue with pool pumps is difficulty priming, often caused by what is referred to as an air lock. This happens when air gets into the suction line to the pump, making it difficult for the pump to pull in water. Pool pumps are designed to push in water, not air, which can cause the pump to struggle to get primed.  Although often the pump will eventually get primed on its own, the strain on the pump can cause damage to the pump and the fittings. It’s better to get the pumped primed quickly, then find out what is causing the air lock in the first place.

Causes Of An Air Locked Pool Pump

An air lock in the pool pump line generally happens when the water level has dropped for some reason. If the water level drops below the inlet valve for the pump, air can get into the line, causing the air lock. The most common cause of this is when the pool has been drained and refilled, or has lost water due to leaks, excessive outdoor temperatures or other factors. If the pool is losing water, there could be bigger issues than just the pump not priming; there could be a leak in the pool lining which needs to be fixed immediately.

One other cause of pumps repeatedly becoming air locked is poor plumbing. Some pumps have a three-way valve which can cause air locks if it was originally plumbed in too high during installation. While the pump may eventually prime, it must work hard to do so, creating heat which will cause damage in the long run.

If you are having issues with your pool pump getting air locked, call in a professional pool service technician to inspect your pump and pool. There could be a simple solution to get your pump working correctly before it needs to be replaced altogether.
